Eating out is fun. It’s enjoyable thing to do. Even necessary business lunches are an agreeable way to conduct modern commerce. In fact today, many people find that they are dining out almost as often as they dine in at home.
So, because having meals away from your usual environment is no longer that special, it’s time to stop having a mini celebration every time you are shown a menu. The important thing to remember is to pick and choose from what’s an offer to please your health as well as your taste buds. All too often eating out can be an excuse for throwing control to the wind and indulging in foods that make you feel terrible straight after you’ve eaten them.
In a good restaurant, gourmet meals should mean healthy meals which make you feel pleasantly satisfied and never deprived. Mouth-watering fresh produce beautifully cooked and attractively presented without unnecessary adornment, will make your heart happy as well as your stomach.
However, food in restaurants usually contains far more fat than food eaten inside the home. An average of fifty percent of the calories in the restaurants food comes from fat. Consequently, it’s very easy for a person to go out for one meal and to eat in that meal, more than a whole day ‘s normal calorie intake.
You must be on your guard and make smart choices. Avoid cream, cheese and butter sauces which are all high in fat, cholesterol and calories. Any food that is deep fried, panfried, crispy or sautéed will be the same. Restaurant made casseroles, stews or pies are likely to have elevated levels of fat, cholesterol and sodium.
When eating out is a general rule, the simpler the preparation, (e.g. grilled, broiled, poached, baked, steamed, roasted or braised) the less fat it contains. Tomato and wine based sauces, even though they may be made with some butter or oil, are almost always much lower in fat than cream based ones.
